Pregnancy After Loss: Coping with Fear and Anxiety

Finding out you're pregnant after experiencing baby loss can bring a mixture of emotions. Alongside hope and excitement, many parents also experience overwhelming fear, anxiety and uncertainty.

If you've experienced miscarriage, stillbirth or baby loss, it's completely normal to worry that history may repeat itself. While those around you may expect this pregnancy to feel joyful, the reality is often much more complex.

At Chasing Rainbows, we want you to know that you're not alone, and your feelings are completely valid.

Why Pregnancy After Loss Can Feel So Different

A pregnancy after loss is often filled with mixed emotions. You may feel grateful to be pregnant again while also feeling terrified of becoming attached, anxious before every appointment or fearful about what the future holds.

Many parents describe:

  • Feeling anxious before scans and appointments

  • Struggling to feel excited

  • Constantly analysing every symptom

  • Finding it difficult to share the news with others

  • Feeling guilty for worrying or unable to enjoy the pregnancy

These feelings are incredibly common and are a natural response to the trauma of previous loss.

There Is No Right or Wrong Way to Feel

It's important to remember that every pregnancy after loss is different, just as every experience of grief is different.

Some people feel hopeful from the beginning, while others find it difficult to relax until their baby is safely in their arms.

You don't have to pretend everything is okay. It's okay to celebrate small milestones while also acknowledging the fears that come with them.

Looking After Your Mental Wellbeing

Although you can't remove every worry, there are ways to help manage anxiety throughout your pregnancy.

You may find it helpful to:

  • Talk openly about your feelings with someone you trust.

  • Take each appointment one step at a time rather than focusing on the entire pregnancy.

  • Limit time spent searching the internet, which can often increase anxiety.

  • Celebrate each milestone, no matter how small.

  • Be kind to yourself and recognise that your feelings are a normal response to what you've experienced.

You Don't Have to Go Through It Alone

One of the biggest challenges during a pregnancy after loss is feeling that nobody truly understands.

Speaking to someone who has experienced a similar journey can make a huge difference. Knowing you're not alone and being able to share your worries without judgement can provide reassurance during an incredibly emotional time.

At Chasing Rainbows, we offer a dedicated Pregnancy After Loss Support Group, providing a safe and welcoming space to connect with others who understand the unique emotions that come with a pregnancy after loss.
